Adobe Firefly

Overview

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of generative AI models and the standalone web app that runs them. It generates and edits images, short videos, audio, text effects, and vector art from prompts, and it powers generative features inside Photoshop and the wider Creative Cloud. Its calling card is commercial safety: Adobe's own models are trained on licensed and public-domain content, outputs carry provenance metadata, and enterprises get IP indemnification. Firefly first launched as a beta in March 2023.

What it does

Firefly creates images, vectors, and text effects from text prompts, and edits existing images via Generative Fill, object add/remove, background swapping, and a brush-based AI Markup for precise control. It generates short video clips (text-to-video and image-to-video, the latter in public beta as of April 2026 at up to 2K), plus sound effects and fully-licensed AI music. Beyond Adobe's own models, the app exposes third-party models reportedly including Google Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image, Runway, Kling, Google Veo, and ElevenLabs, selectable per generation. A 2026 Firefly AI Assistant (creative agent) can execute multi-step Creative Skills across Creative Cloud apps from a conversational prompt; Adobe frames it as orchestration under human direction, not full autonomy. A human prompts, selects, and refines, so Firefly is a copilot.

Integrations & setup

Self-serve web app at firefly.adobe.com plus deep integration into Photoshop (Generative Fill), Premiere Pro, Express, Illustrator, and Lightroom. The AI Assistant connects to Frame.io for review cycles. A Firefly API supports programmatic and batch generation. Built primarily on Adobe's proprietary Firefly models, with partner models available inside the same interface.

Pricing

Freemium. A free tier offers limited monthly generative credits. Standalone paid plans reportedly start at $9.99/month (Standard), $19.99/month (Pro, which adds partner models and Photoshop on web/mobile), and a higher Premium tier. Paid plans include unlimited standard generations; premium features (text-to-video, image-to-video, audio translation, partner-model outputs) consume monthly credits. Firefly is also bundled into Creative Cloud subscriptions, and an enterprise API exists. Prices are vendor-reported and change frequently; check the plans page.

Best for / not for

Best for creators, marketers, and enterprises that need commercially-safe, indemnified generative assets tightly integrated with Photoshop and Creative Cloud. Less suited to those who want the absolute frontier of image or video quality (where specialist models like Midjourney often rate higher) or an autonomous creative agent that ships work without per-step human direction.

Recraft targets brand and true-vector design; Runway and Sora focus on AI video generation; Midjourney and the partner models inside Firefly itself compete on raw image quality.
