Pi

Overview

Pi, short for "personal intelligence," is Inflection AI's consumer conversational assistant, launched in May 2023. Unlike productivity-first chatbots, Pi was designed around emotional intelligence: a kind, supportive companion for advice, brainstorming, venting, and casual conversation. Inflection AI was founded in 2022 by Reid Hoffman, Mustafa Suleyman, and Karen Simonyan, and is based in Palo Alto. The consumer product lives at pi.ai (the original heypi.com domain now redirects there).

What it does

The core experience is empathetic, turn-by-turn chat running on Inflection's proprietary models. Pi adds a real-time voice mode with a small set of selectable voices, and reportedly grounds answers with real-time web search. It is available on the web, iOS and Android apps, and messaging channels including SMS, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger, so the same conversation can continue across surfaces. All of this is assistant-grade: Pi answers when prompted and does not take actions outside the conversation, browse autonomously, or use external tools on the user's behalf.

Integrations & setup

There is no setup beyond opening pi.ai or the app, or messaging Pi on a supported channel. The consumer product has no public API and no third-party workflow integrations; its "integrations" are the messaging surfaces it runs on (SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger). Chat runs entirely on Inflection's own proprietary models.

Pricing

Pi is free to use, with no subscription required and historically no hard message cap. Inflection has indicated it may introduce premium tiers for high-frequency or enterprise users, but the consumer assistant has remained free. (Inflection's paid commercial products are its enterprise models, priced per token via API, which are separate from the consumer Pi chat.)

Best for / not for

Best for people who want a supportive, conversational AI to talk things through, get advice, or use as a low-friction sounding board, especially via voice or messaging apps. Not suited to anyone who needs an AI that executes tasks, automates workflows, integrates with other tools, or can be embedded via API. The 2024 departure of most of the founding team to Microsoft and Inflection's enterprise pivot also make the consumer roadmap less certain than rivals with heavy ongoing investment.

Company status

Inflection raised about $1.3B at a roughly $4B valuation in 2023 (backers included Nvidia and Microsoft). In March 2024, co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karen Simonyan and nearly the entire team moved to Microsoft, which paid a reported $650M to non-exclusively license Inflection's technology. Under new CEO Sean White, Inflection refocused on "Inflection for Enterprise," an ownable, deployable (cloud, on-prem, or hybrid) offering built on the Inflection 3.0 model family (a conversational Pi model and a Productivity model), announced October 2024, while keeping the consumer Pi chatbot running.

Alternatives

Character.AI is the closest companion-style competitor (user-created characters, voice, multimodal), while general assistants like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta AI overlap on free conversational chat but lean toward productivity and broader capability rather than Pi's empathy-first positioning.
